The Everest Gokyo Lakes Trek is an upgraded and extended version of the classic Everest Base Camp trek, widely considered one of the finest trekking experiences in the region. This exciting journey takes you through the stunning Gokyo Valley, home to a series of pristine glacial lakes, offering some of the most scenic landscapes in the Himalayas.

A highlight of the trek is Gokyo Ri, one of the best viewpoints in the Everest region, where you can enjoy breathtaking panoramas of the world’s highest peaks, including Mount Everest. The trek also includes Cho La Pass, one of the highest Himalayan passes, adding a thrilling challenge for adventurous trekkers.

Along the route, you will explore famous Sherpa villages such as Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar, gaining insight into traditional Himalayan culture. Sampling local food, observing the Sherpa lifestyle, and experiencing the warm hospitality of the communities are among the most rewarding aspects of the trek. Wildlife enthusiasts may also encounter Himalayan musk deer, red pandas, or even elusive snow leopards.

Trekking in the Gokyo region requires two permits: the Sagarmatha National Park Permit and the Pashang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit, both of which can be obtained along the way. Like most treks in the Everest region, this is a teahouse-style trek, with local lodges offering good facilities for food, accommodation, electricity, and even Wi-Fi.

The best time to undertake the Everest Gokyo Lakes Trek is during spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when the weather is stable and visibility is excellent. Trekking during the monsoon season is not recommended due to heavy rainfall, and winter is also challenging for this high-altitude trek.

Important Note

  1. This trek reaches elevations above 5,000 meters, so proper acclimatization is essential to avoid altitude sickness.
  2. Good physical fitness and prior hiking experience are highly recommended.
  3. Weather in the Everest region can change rapidly, and flight delays to/from Lukla Airport are common. Please keep 1–2 extra buffer days in Kathmandu.
  4. Follow your guide’s instructions at all times for safety and altitude management.
  5. Travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and emergency helicopter evacuation is mandatory.
  6.  Accommodation and facilities in remote mountain areas are basic but clean and comfortable.
  7. Walking hours range from 5–7 hours per day on varied terrain, including steep ascents and descents.
  8. Carry only essential items; porters have weight limits.
  9. Respect local culture, traditions, and the natural environment of Sagarmatha National Park.
  10. Trek itineraries may change due to weather, health conditions, or unforeseen circumstances for your safety.

Trip Itinerary

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, where a Glacier Nepal Treks representative will warmly welcome you and transfer you to your hotel by private vehicle. After a short rest, you will meet your trekking guide at our office. You can ask any questions you may have about the trek, and the guide will provide detailed answers and information. Overnight stay at the hotel.

It’s about a 35-minute scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, one of the most thrilling mountain airstrips in the world. During the flight, you can enjoy breathtaking aerial views of the Himalayan range. After landing and having breakfast in Lukla, we organize our gear and begin the trek. The trail gradually descends toward Thadokoshi, passing through beautiful pine forests and small Sherpa settlements. Along the way, you’ll enjoy impressive views of Kusum Kanguru rising dramatically above the valley. We then continue walking alongside the rushing waters of the Dudh Koshi River, crossing suspension bridges and passing mani stones and prayer wheels before reaching the peaceful village of Phakding. Overnight stay at Phakding.

After breakfast, we begin our trek, gradually making our way toward Banker while enjoying beautiful views of Thamserku rising majestically above the valley. Today, we officially enter Sagarmatha National Park, the protected region that is home to the Everest Himalayas. Crossing several thrilling suspension bridges along the Dudh Koshi River, we continue our steady climb through pine forests and charming Sherpa villages. As we ascend higher, we are rewarded with our first glimpse of Mount Everest. If luck is on our side, we might even spot a rare red panda along the trail. By late afternoon, we reach Namche Bazaar, the vibrant gateway to Everest, where we stay overnight.

Namche Bazaar is the gateway to Everest and the largest village in the Khumbu region, serving as the main trading and cultural hub for trekkers and locals alike. To help with acclimatization, we hike up to Everest View Hotel, one of the world’s highest-placed hotels, where we are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, and many other surrounding peaks. After descending back to Namche, you can explore the Sagarmatha National Park headquarters, visit the Sherpa Museum to learn about local culture and mountaineering history, or stroll through the lively market. Cozy cafés along the streets often screen documentaries about Everest and Sherpa life. Overnight at Namche Bazaar.

After breakfast, trek begins with an almost flat walk of about two hours, offering spectacular panoramic views of Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse, and many other majestic mountains. After this scenic stretch, we begin the ascent to Mongla, where you can enjoy stunning views of Thamserku and Kantega. From Mongla, the trail descends to Phortse Tanga, passing through beautiful rhododendron forests. We then continue climbing gently alongside the Dudh Kosi River until reaching Dole, a peaceful high-altitude village. Overnight stay at Dole.

After breakfast, we begin our climb for the day. Along the way, you’ll enjoy magnificent views of Cho Oyu, the world’s sixth-highest mountain at 8,201 m. The trail follows a narrow, sandy path beside the Dudh Kosi River, passing through the quaint village of Luza. It’s important to maintain a steady pace—neither too fast nor too slow—as we continue the ascent toward Machhermo, a high-altitude village surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Upon arrival, we can visit the local health post, where a lecture on altitude sickness is offered to help trekkers stay safe at high elevations. Overnight stay at Machhermo.

After breakfast, we trek toward Gokyo. After an initial ascent, the trail narrows as we navigate a rocky section and cross the Dudh Kosi River just before reaching the massive Ngozumpa Glacier. The route continues past Longpongo and Raboche Tsho before arriving at Gokyo, home to the stunning turquoise lake Dudh Pokhari. Once at the village, you are free to explore the lake, which lies just beside your teahouse. Overnight stay at Gokyo.

We start early in the morning for a hike to Gokyo Ri, one of the best viewpoints in the Everest region. The climb takes a few hours and rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of towering peaks, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Ngozumpa Kang, Gyachung Kang, Pumori, Nuptse, Makalu, Cholatse, Tabuche, Kangtega, Thamserku, and Kusum Kanguru. From the summit, you can also admire the Gokyo Lakes and the Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in Nepal. After descending back to Gokyo, there is an opportunity to explore up to the 6th lake, located beside the glacier, adding even more stunning alpine scenery to your day. Overnight stay at Gokyo.

After breakfast, we begin our descent from Gokyo toward Dole, retracing the trail past the beautiful series of Gokyo Lakes and walking alongside the Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in Nepal. Along the way, enjoy stunning views of the surrounding high mountains, including towering peaks and snow-capped ridges. We pass through Machhermo and several other traditional villages before reaching Dole, a peaceful settlement nestled in the valley. Overnight stay at Dole.

After breakfast, we descend from Dole to Phortse Tanga before ascending to Mongla, enjoying stunning views of Kangtega and Thamserku along the way. From Mongla, the trail descends to Sanasa, then continues along a relatively flat path toward Namche Bazaar. Before reaching Namche, we catch our last close-up views of Mount Everest and surrounding peaks, making this a memorable section of the trek. Overnight stay at Namche Bazaa

Today marks the final day of our trekking adventure. The trail descends steeply through forests and small settlements until we reach the Dudh Koshi River. After crossing several suspension bridges, we officially exit Sagarmatha National Park, leaving the high Himalayan wilderness behind. Continuing downhill, we pass through Thado Koshi, one of the lowest points of the Everest Base Camp trek. From here, we begin the final ascent toward Lukla, retracing familiar trails and reflecting on the incredible journey we’ve completed. Upon arrival in Lukla, we celebrate the successful end of our trek and enjoy a well-deserved rest. Overnight at Lukla.

After breakfast, we take an early flight back to Kathmandu, enjoying one last glimpse of the Himalayas from the air. Upon arrival, our representative will transfer you to your hotel. After a refreshing shower and some rest, you can explore Thamel, a lively area filled with shops, cafés, and souvenir stores—perfect for some last-minute shopping. In the evening, we gather for a special farewell dinner at a traditional Nepali restaurant, where you’ll enjoy authentic cuisine along with cultural dance performances to celebrate the successful completion of your adventure. Overnight at the hotel.

Today marks your final day in Nepal. A representative from Glacier Nepal Treks will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport by private vehicle for your onward journey. As you head home, we hope you carry unforgettable memories of the Himalayas, the warm hospitality of the Sherpa people, and the incredible adventure you’ve just completed. Safe travels and see you again — home sweet home!

Gokyo Lake Trek

My first trek in Nepal was with Rab and that was an excellent experience. We went for the Gokyo Lake Trek expedition which the hike covered amongst others Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri. The view from these locations were fantastic and included Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and beautiful Gokyo lakes. Throughout the trek Rab was attentive to my mum who struggled on stony routes, acrophobia & uneven paths. Rab was such a fantastic guide that he took care of my mum so well, comforted her and supported her to overcome her fear and challenges. This is definitely a another level of guide service. I would be forever grateful to Rab for his assistance and the wonderful trekking journey I had for this trip.
